ABSTRACT:

Background: Fire safety is the set of practices intended to prevent the destruction caused by Fire. Fire safety is the set of practices intended to reduce destruction caused by fire. Fire safety measures include those that are intended to prevent the ignition of an uncontrolled fire and those that are used to limit the spread and impact of a fire.[4] Fire related accidents have, on average, killed 35 people every day over the five years between 2016 and 2020, according to a report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Aims and Objectives: To Assess the knowledge regarding Fire Safety and their practices among the students of 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing, Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura, and to find out Association between selected demographic variable and to develop on hand training module.  Materials and Method: The study was conducted among 60 students of Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura and using simple random sampling technique. Data were obtained using structured knowledge questionnaire to assess the knowledge regarding Fire safety and their practices. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were use to analyze the Demographic data and used structured questionnaire. Karl person formula is used to determine Correlation whereas the Association is determined by using Chi -Square formula. Results and Conclusion: The study revealed that majority of students level of knowledge are 36.70% poor knowledge, 61.70% students are average knowledge and 1.70% students are good knowledge regarding fire safety and their practices. There exist positive moderate correlation (r = 0.75) between knowledge and their practices. Study also revealed there is no significant Association between the knowledge and their demographic variables such as Age, Gender, Annual household income, Religion and attending any training of fire safety practices at p ≤ 0.05 level.

INTRODUCTION:

“Ounce of prevention is worth pound of cure.”

Benjamin Franklin

Fire in any occupancy has the potential to cause harm to its occupants and severe damage to property. Fire accident in hospital can lead many injury and death. Knowledge and practices of health care workers about fire safety prevention can save many lives.

A fire accident is any situation in which there is a greater than normal risk of harm to people on property due to fire. Fire accidents can result in catastrophic injury and devastating damage. If fire occurs in a health care agency, the nurse protects clients from immediate injury, reports the exact location of the fire. The nurse should be aware of the fire protection practices and should be followed during the accidents.

The importance of fire safety in the workplace be overlooked. Due to the number of workplaces surrounded by ingredients and materials that will quickly ignite a fire, it is necessary for fire safety to be discussed. Discussions regarding fire safety foster an understanding of fire hazards and the three necessary ingredients to ignite a fire – heat, fuel and oxygen.

In particular, Lack of fire escape skills often leads to casualties. At the same time, the hidden danger of fire caused by the fire code violations is more prominent, such as the occupation of fire truck passageway, the locking of emergency exit, the blocking of evacuation passageway, the nonstandard of fire doors and the damage of fire hydrants. As a group of higher vocational college students, student's awareness of fire safety, fire Knowledge level, Attitude and Behaviour towards Fire safety directly Affect the Fire safety of college campus.

NEED OF STUDY:

Fire-related accidents have, on average, killed 35 people every day in the five years between 2016 and 2020, according to a report by Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI), maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau. They will has along term impact on the work and the future society. So, it is very important to carry out fire safety education for higher vocational student and improve their fire safety quality.

According to the national fire protection association. India report that more than 3000 people die in fire accident each year and another 15,000 are injured. Fire deaths in residence are roughly calculated as 85% of total fire accidents. In 2021, India sadly recorded 1.6 million fire accidents, with 27,027 innocent lives lost. The risk for acquiring the fire accident is highest among the health care institution.

Out of 202 participant, majority 61.39% were females, 43.56% were in the age of 18- 27 years, 28.21% were gnm,34.165 were staff nurse, and 85.15% had 1-4 years of work experience. 96.4% had correct knowledge about what to do when there is fire accident 81.68% had correctly answered the question about DCP fire extinguishers can be used for A, B, C classes of fire. It is often common for people to forego fire safety training and education, even through its important. Everyone should be trained on what to do in case of fire because it goes beyond simply protecting yourself.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

National fire protection association 400(2022) the definition of hazardous materials incorporates “different chemical substances that are in waste or usage formate of storage and handling that may tolerate physical and health hazard to occupants”.

Koutsomarkos et al. (2021) Discussed the need for simplicity of fire risk indexing , where more complex approaches are deemed less transparent, and non feasible for its users. Therefore, it is imperative to comprehend the various causes of fire, types of combustibles in office properties.2

Brzezinska and Bayant (2020) conducted research Utilizing fire Strategy risk index to benchmark key Performance objectives. The Significant consideration for fire risk Strategy Assessment covered in their study Comprised of control of ignition  Sources, smoke control, detection and suppression systems, Field Service Intervention and firefighting[1].

The NFPA report of the year 2007 to 2013 shows a significant decrease in the rate of injuries of fire-fighters encountered on the foreground. The total number of fire ground has decreased from 38,340 to 29,760. The graph below shows the total number of fire-fighter injuries in the line of duty from the year 1981 to 2013. This shows a considerable decrease in the worldwide statistics of fire-fighters injuries from 103,340 to 65,850.[3]

Criteria for sample selection:

Inclusion criteria:

·         Students who are willing to participate in research study.

·         Students available at the time of data collection.

·         Students who are able to understand English.

Exclusion criteria:

·         Students not willing to participate in research study.

·         Students not available at the time of data collection.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

A Descriptive Survey approach will be used in the study to assess the knowledge regarding Fire safety practices among 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students of Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura with a view to provide on hand training.

The investigator had divided tool in two sections A self-administered structured questionnaire was prepared to assess the demographic profile consists of the demographical data such as age group, sex, occupation, education, history of Fire safety practices in students.  Section II: A self-administered questionnaire was prepared to assess the knowledge regarding Fire safety practices among 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students of Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura with a view to provide on hand training.

In this study, target population consists of all the among selected 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students of Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura of Mehsana district. For selection of sample, investigator had use purposive sampling technique, so that everyone In the entire population has an gathered in a process that give all the individuals in the population equal chances of being selected in the samples. sample size is 60. Investigator has developed a Structured Knowledge   .

Questionnaire to a study to  assess the knowledge regarding Fire safety practices among 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students of Ambaji Nursing College, Ganeshpura with a view to provide on hand training. The reliability of the Structured Knowledge Questionnaire was determined by Split Half method using Karl Pearson's formula'. Reliability of Structured Knowledge Questionnaire was (r = 0.90) which is more than 0.7; hence the questionnaire was found to be reliable.

CONCLUSION:

The finding of the study revealed that majority of respondents score below 45%, having poor knowledge. People who had score in of 36%, having good knowledge. People who had score in of 17%, having very good knowledge. People who had score of 2%, having very excellent knowledge.

The main purpose to undertake this study is to find how much knowledge is there in students regarding fire safety and practices Though it is still going pandemic but still students don't have good knowledge. Moreover, many updates in treatment modalities is still unknown to them so there is extremely need of providing awareness about fire safety and their practice.
